Elizabeth Economy

Elizabeth C. Economy is the C.V. Starr Senior Fellow and Director of Asia Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. An expert on China-U.S. relations and Chinese domestic foreign policy, with particular focus on the environment, she is the author of The River Runs Black, a major book on the environmental challenges to China's future, as well as many other publications on the same topic. Dr. Economy has been a member of the Board of Councilors for the China-U.S. Center for Sustainable Development, a member of the National Committee on U.S.-China relations, and a member of the Institute for International research at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies. She has written in Foreign Affairs, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the International Herald Tribune. Dr. Economy holds a Ph.D from the University of Michigan, an A.M from Stanford University, and a B.A. from Swarthmore College.
